Hymn of the Union of Socialist
Soviet Republics
The "Hymn of the USSR" replaced in 1944 the
Russian version of "The Internationale", which was the Soviet
Union's national anthem until that year. The lyrics of the
hymn were written by Sergey Mikhalkov (*1913) and Gabriel
El-Registan (1899-1945), the music was composed by Alexander
Alexandrov (1883-1946). With lyrics by Vasily Lebedev-Kumach
(1898-1949) Alexandrov's song was originally supposed to be
the anthem of the Bolshevik Party. Mikhalkov himself changed
lyrics in 1977, in that version this anthem remained the hymn
of the USSR until 1991. In the year 2000 the Russian
Federation re-established Alexandrov's song as national anthem,
and again Mikhalkov - already 87 years old - wrote new lyrics
for the present bourgeois Russian state. - The original lyrics
by Mikhalkov and El-Registan from 1943/44 were translated into
English by the great American communist artist and performer
Paul Robeson (1898-1976).

United forever in friendship and labour, |

Our mighty

Shining in

Our

of freedom
